What an egg-citing morning we had in nursery. We joined the rest of school in a day of STEM learning. We focused on how to keep ‘Humpty Dumpty’ safe when he falls of the wall. The children had to find out which material kept ‘Humpty’ from breaking, from a selection of bubble wrap, shredded paper, rice, porridge oats, cotton pads and nothing. The children counted out 1-6 when selecting the eggs and plastic zip bags. We made sure that we had the ‘same’ amount. The children then drew on their own faces to create their ‘Humpty Dumpty’. Each child then placed their egg into one of the plastic bags and zipped ‘Humpty’ in safe. Next, we took turns to place him on the wall and sung the song, dropping Humpty at the correct point in the song.
Once all eggs had been dropped, we observed which materials had saved him from breaking. The porridge oats and bubble wrap work each time. In our learning areas we ordered the nursery rhyme, singing the song as we went looked at the cards. We counted up and down the wall as Humpty climbed. The children discussed the emotions of the different ‘Humpty Dumptys’ and built their own walls in the construction area. Outside we jumped off the wall demonstrating our skills.
